Photojournalist Haywood Galbreath

Hello, my name is Haywood Galbreath. I am the executive director of Minority Photo/ Journalism Institute. This year we instituted a new award for HBCU students in journalism. It is the Lu Vason HBCU Sports Photo of the Year contest. Lu Vison was the founder of the world-famous “Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo”. His work providing Black Cowboys and Cowgirls a place to showcase their talents was history-making. Sadly, Lu passed away several years ago, but his wife, Valeria, continues to tradition. of “The Greatest Show on Dirt”.

Because Lu was such an inspiration, we decided to honor him with a scholarship and contest. For young men and women attending HBCUs who wish to pursue a career in sports photography. We have a panel of judges who Judged the contest. However, we decided to give the people a chance to vote on their favorite photo as well. So, we have established the “Voter Choice Award” for the Lu Vason HBCU Sports photo of the year.

Below are four photos for this year’s contest. Check the box of your favorite photos. The votes will be tallied and the photos that get the most votes will win the Voter Choice Award for 2022-2023. And as an extra bonus, you’ll also be entered for a chance to win an iconic image. Captured by History-Making photojournalist Haywood Galbreath.
